Internationale Politik Special: Digital Europe 2030

The journal Internationale Politik (IP) is publishing a special edition inspired by the results of our scenario process

In the project Digital Europe 2030 - Public Sphere and Digital Sovereignty, an interdisciplinary group of experts developed scenarios for the future of Europe in a complex foresight process during the first half of this year. These scenarios have now served as inspiration for a special issue of the journal Internationale Politik (“International Politics” / IP) published in cooperation with Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft.

The authors of this special edition reflect further on the themes and implications of the scenarios with a focus on the three dimensions geopolitics, regulation and data sovereignty as well as society and democracy. Among them are Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook, Executive Director of the Future of Diplomacy Project at the Harvard Kennedy School, author and journalist Georg Diez and Klaus Hommels, one of Europe’s leading venture capitalists. Where is Europe's place in the face of the digital superpowers USA and China? Do we need a European Amazon, and if so, why? What rules might digital platforms need, and how could Europe better take advantage of its well-developed ability to regulate? The edition also includes an assessment of the state of the media in times of massive disinformation. Among other things, it will cover technological sovereignty, European self-confidence and the resilience of democracy. The authors’ analyses are followed by recommendations for action. Additionally, a representative survey brings in public opinions on the subject of digitalisation.

The project Digital Europe 2030 is currently in the phase of transferring results to the realm of praxis, since the developed scenarios will only have a concrete impact if strategic options for action are derived from them. We are currently continuing this process by implementing various workshops. Publications such as the special edition of the IP make an equally significant contribution to this process.

The special edition will be available from 30 October (German language only) on the Internationale Politik website.
